Update on Tomorrow’s Menu and Special Short Film Screening!

26 Aug

ImageMore exciting news about tomorrow’s screening of DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD! Red Hook Flicks has partnered with African Film Festival, Inc. to show a short film called “Bongo Barbershop” before tomorrow’s main event. Here’s a brief description:

An East African MC, Balozi Dola, wanders into a Bronx barbershop on his pilgrimage to find “the real hip hop.” Stumbling upon the pioneers of the New York hip hop scene, including Grandmaster Flash’s original partner DJ Easy Mike, Balozi enters the scene rhyming with Grandmaster Caz. “Bongo” is the Swahili expression for “Brain” used in local hip hop slang.

African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) is dedicated to advancing an enhanced understanding of African culture through the moving image. It offers diverse platforms for the wide distribution of African media through its flagship annual film festival and complementary year-round programming. AFF is committed to increasing visibility and recognition for African media artists by introducing African film and culture to a broad range of audiences in the United States and abroad, bypassing economic, class and racial barriers.

We’re psyched to be closing out our season by teaming up with this awesome organization to show this film. Our sponsors, Home/Made and Pickett Furniture, are bringing us a delicious menu of foccacia with figs from Jeremy Pickett’s own backyard, and Home/Made is bringing back their popcorn for those of you who have been missing it this year. We’ll also have Paletas, Mexican ice pops, from neighbor La Newyorkina, and Walter Youngblood will be on hand with his popsicles again, so there’ll be no shortage of delicious treats on our final night! The weather report is looking good, so we’ll see you at the pier!

DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, coming August 27!

24 Aug

Image

Hard to believe it, but the final movie of this year’s Red Hook Flicks is nearly upon us! Come out to the pier one last time for DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, voted the Audience Choice film at our fundraiser, back in June a million years ago. DON’T TELL MOM, a cult classic starring Christina Applegate in her prime, is sponsored by Pickett Furniture and Home/Made. In addition to whatever deliciousness Home/Made is serving for dinner, Steve’s Key Lime will be open late selling tarts, pies and swingles.

The film starts at 8:30. If there’s any chance of rain, check back here for updates on any possible location change. In the meantime, let’s all keep our fingers crossed for good weather…

We Are A Go Tonight at Valentino Pier!

28 Aug

Since yesterday’s update, the weather gods have spared us and we are a go at Valentino Pier tonight!!! See you at 8:30 for hilarity, hijinx–and pulled pork, HUZZAH!

YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN tonight with food by Brooklyn Ice House and snacks by HOME/MADE and Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies–yay!

Red Hook Choice: YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN . . . coming 8/28!

24 Aug

UPDATE: The weather is looking pretty unstable thanks to Hurricane Isaac, so check back here tomorrow for the official rain call, which we’ll make by 6 P.M. The bad thing about getting rained out is that we don’t get to watch a blissful sunset on the pier or curl our toes in the grass. The good news is we get to watch the movie at Bait & Tackle–where there’s beer!!

Gather round children, and shed a tear with me for what will be the final screening in this summer’s series of movies on the pier. It has been a blast, Red Hook, in no small part thanks to our fabulous neighbors, some beautiful weather, extraordinary food, and not least of all the best sponsors an upstart local film series could ask for! This summer we’re closing festivities with a true classic from one of comedy’s greats: Mel Brooks’ YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN, our neighborhood choice for Summer 2012. Gene Wilder, Cloris Leachman, Terry Garr, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman, and some chick named Abby Normal put on the ritz just for you. Super Duper!

Red Hook Choice is brought to us by Find Home Furnishings and of course each and every one of you who voted at this year’s fundraiser.

Snacks by Home/Made and Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies and a classic Popeye cartoon courtesy of Sunny’s Bar. Dinner this evening is courtesy of Brooklyn Ice House, who will be serving pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, and mac cheese for your gustatory delight!

The show begins circa 8:30 PM.

E.T. . . . coming 8/21

17 Aug

UPDATE–SPECIAL FOOD VENDOR:

In addition to the spectacular food being provided by The Good Fork and snacks from Home/Made and Steve’s, we’re very fortunate to have John Vitko of Scout’s Honor Creamery in Vermont here on Tuesday evening to sell his handcrafted treats:

Chocolate Chip Cookie Vanilla Ice Cream Sandwich: $4
Vanilla Ice Cream Brownie Sandwich: $5
French Macaroon Chocolate Ice Cream Sandwich: $6
Popcicles (grapefruit, cucumber mint, strawberry lemon, peaches n cream): $3
Plus a special pop just for adults–Mojito!: $4

We cannot wait!

This Tuesday join us at the pier for one of the great summer family films of all time. E.T. helped define the summer blockbuster with its wildly popular boy-meets-baby-alien-and-goes-head-to-head-against-nepharious-U.S.-government-forces-to-protect-him tale. It features Henry Thomas; Peter Coyote; Drew Barrymore, in what is surely her finest screen performance to date; and a contender for the world’s most expensive long distance call. Can you imagine if they remade E.T. today? He and Elliott would be stuck in development hell at iTunes trying to get their intergalactic telephony app approved. Ah, simpler times. But I digress…

Tuesday’s movie is brought to you by Bait & Tackle. Dinner by The Good Fork — Japanese Short Rib Curry with Farm Vegetables and Purple Rice, mmmm. Only $8! Snacks by Home/Made and Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies.

And don’t forget to come early to catch a classic Popeye cartoon courtesy of Sunny’s Bar.

As always, festivities begin circa 8:30 PM.

BLADE … coming 8/14

9 Aug

UPDATE: The BLADE show will go on regardless of weather. If it’s too wet at the pier, we will show the movie at the Red Hook Bait and Tackle. We will make a rain call by 6 p.m. Watch this space for the decision.

Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, and Stephen Dorff battle it out against a smokin techno soundtrack for the future of the human race in the 90s cult-classic vampire flick, BLADE. Forget everything you learned about vampires in Twilight–not to mention that whole Lilith thing on True Blood. This is one serious blood god we’re up against and the Daywalker is our only hope. Check out the trailer here.

As always, the show starts at 8:30 p.m. But come early for dinner from MILE END DELI and THE O’CONNELL ORGANIZATION. They are serving cured and smoked beef brisket on housebaked rye with mustard. It’s just $8.

Plus, we have popcorn from Home/Made (1$) and tarts from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies ($3). And don’t miss the pre-show entertainment of an old Popeye cartoon brought to us by Sunny’s Bar.

ZOMBIELAND … coming 8/7

3 Aug

Nut up or shut up!

That’s right ZOMBIELAND, the new zombie cult classic, is coming to Valentino Pier on Tuesday, August 7.

And for all of you who have been trying — and failing — to eat at POK POK, they are the evening’s sponsor, along with REALTY COLLECTIVE. That means… POK POK for dinner!

What’s on the menu? Khao Man Som Tams. What’s that you ask? Here’s what Pok Pok says…

Khao Man Som Tam is a sweet shredded pork cooked in palm sugar and black soy over coconut rice, topped with fried shallots and cilantro, and served with a side of Papaya salad.

We also have popcorn from Home/Made ($1) and tarts from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies ($3). All proceeds benefit Red Hook Flicks.

And don’t forget to come early to catch the Popeye cartoon brought to us by Sunny’s Bar.

Film rolls at 8:30-ish.

ALIEN … coming 7/31

26 Jul

Prepare to be scared.

Thirty three years after Ridley Scott’s original ALIEN terrified audiences …. it comes to Valentino Pier. See it on July 31.

Dinner comes courtesy of our sponsors, WATERFRONT KITCHENS and MARK’S PIZZA. Plus we have excellent movie snacks: popcorn from Home/Made for $1 and key lime tarts from Steve’s for $3.

Film rolls around 8:45 p.m. Our weekly installment of Popeye cartoons, brought to us by Sunny’s Bar, shows at 8:30 p.m.

Come early to get a good spot on the lawn. Film rolls around 8:30 p.m.

HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON … Coming 7/24

18 Jul

I love, love, love How to Train Your Dragon. I resisted seeing it — because it’s animated — and left wondering why I’d ever hesitated. The story is great, the dragons are adorable and it’s fun for everyone.

Don’t miss your chance to see it down at Valentino Pier on July 24. It will be memorable. It’s not just for kids. Trust me; you’ll be crying.

Plus, the main dragon looks just like Mr. Red Hook Flicks’ (that’s The Colonel to Red Hookers) cat, Dakota. It’s uncanny really.

Sponsors Brooklyn Ice House and Pickett Furniture are bringing the food. The menu isn’t set yet, but they always do kid-friendly fare (an adult guilty pleasure). Think mac and cheese, pulled pork and more.

We start the show with a Popeye cartoon brought to us by Sunny’s Bar.

Don’t forget the popcorn, either, from Home/Made and Key Lime Pie from Steve’s. Excellent snacks. We’ll also have kid-appropriate drinks on hand.

Film rolls around 8:30 p.m. (or when the light allows).

Reminders:

  1. Quiet, leashed dogs are welcome
  2. Move lawn chairs to the back and sides of the screening area
  3. Bikes should be locked to the fence, not brought on the lawn
  4. Drink at your own risk. The cops ticket
  5. The nearest bathroom is at Fairway
  6. Have fun!

TREMORS is coming…7/17

11 Jul

“Be advised, however, that there are two more, repeat, two more motherhumpers!”

Oh, yes, that means it is time for TREMORS! And how can you go wrong with a Kevin Bacon flick down at the pier? We say you can’t…

Film rolls at 8:30 p.m. (or thereabouts, depending on sunset), with a pre-feature showing of old Popeye cartoons brought to us by Sunny’s Bar.

The food promises to be tasty — and movie appropriate — with Red Hook Lobster Pound and Movers Not Shakers bringing lobster rolls, lobster BLTs and more.

Need snacks? As always, we will have popcorn from Home/Made for $1 and key lime tarts from Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies for $3. (It all goes fast…)

Same rules as always:

  1. There is no bathroom on site. The nearest one is at Fairway. Plan accordingly.
  2. No drinking. Really. The cops ticket.
  3. No bikes on the lawn; lock them up on the fence.
  4. Dogs are welcome, if quiet/on leash.
  5. Lawn chairs only at back of lawn – don’t block people sitting on blankets.

Check out the Tremors trailer on our schedule page.

Just watch out for what’s underground.
