UPDATE: In case you’re wondering folks, we’re staying at the pier for tonight’s screening!

Wes Anderson brings his unique brand of fabulist realism to Roald Dahl’s childhood classic. Nominated for Best Animated Feature at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the film features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Willen Defoe, Own Wilson, and for you Pulp fans out there, Jarvis Cocker.

Special thanks to our sponsors for the evening, Waterfront Kitchens and Mark’s Pizza! Mark’s will be selling slices (plain, pepperoni, and supreme) at the park, and Steve’s Key Lime as always will stay open late so you can partake of their tarty goodness.

See you at the pier!

COMING TO AMERICA . . . coming 7/14!

10 Jul

comingtoamerica-blog480

This Eddie Murphy classic answers the age-old question: Where does a poor-little-rich crown prince of Zamunda go to find a bride? Why, Queens of course! (And more precisely, a now unrecognizable Long Island City–but, hey, back then that’s where you went for all your romantic needs, not to mention fast food franchise rip-offs.) Murphy re-teams with TRADING PLACES director John Landis and stars alongside James Earl Jones and Arsenio Hall in this 80s comedy classic, brought to you this Tuesday by MOVERS NOT SHAKERS and RED HOOK LOBSTER POUND! The Pound’s food truck, Big Red, will be on site serving three kinds of lobster rolls ($17 each), hot dogs ($5), and more; Steve’s Key Lime will stay open late slinging their tarts and swingles; and F & M Bagels will be on hand with beverages. So bust out your Soul Glo, cue up your Sexual Chocolate records, and we’ll see you at the pier!

JURASSIC PARK . . . coming 7/7!

5 Jul

jurassic-park-first-sighting-550x294

We see you sitting there, dejectedly eating your leftover potato salad and hotdogs amid spent roman candles and sparklers, forlorn that the holiday weekend is over. But while the countrywide party that is our nation’s birthday may be behind us, the summer-long party that is Red Hook Flicks is just beginning! And have we got a monster-sized opening night for you.

Just a few weeks ago JURASSIC WORLD broke all box office records to become the biggest opening weekend of all time. Now you can see where it all began with Steven Spielberg’s original dino-chomps-man extravaganza, JURASSIC PARK! Based on Michael Chricton’s blockbuster novel, the film stars Sam Neil, Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum, Richard Attenborough, and Samuel Jackson as they desperately attempt to outsmart a nasty pack of genetically engineered dinosaurs on the rampage.

JURASSIC PARK is presented by SHARED and EARLY BIRD FOODS + SALVATORE BKLYN. EARLY BIRD and SALVATORE will be serving porchetta sandwiches with home made pickles ($10) and granola bars ($3); STEVE’S KEY LIME will be open across the parking lot and serving their pies, tarts, and swingles; and KING LECHE CREMES will be on site with their hand-crafted goats milk ice cream bars. Show starts at 8:30 PM. See you at the pier!

Red Hook Flicks 2015 Fundraiser!

17 May

RedHookFlicksPostcard2015

It was a long, cold winter, but we here at Red Hook Flicks kept warm doing what we do best–dreaming of summer sunsets on the pier and planning an AWESOME slate of free movies! We can’t wait to share this year’s lineup with you at our annual fundraiser. Come out and join us on Sunday, May 31st at 5 p.m. at Red Hook Bait and Tackle. There’ll be food from our sponsors and raffle madness with an amazing array of prizes from local businesses, including Foxy & Winston, Saxelby Cheesemongers, and Tribe Bicycle Co.!

And perhaps MOST importantly, you get to vote on this season’s NEIGHBORHOOD CHOICE film! Last year the classic (and Red Hook set) On the Waterfront won out.  What will it be this year? As always, that’s up to you. Your $10 entrance donation includes free food and one automatic vote–but there’s always the option to purchase more. Ballot stuffing and write-in candidates are highly encouraged!

It’s Always Something…

26 Aug

Today as you all know is the final screening for Red Hook Flicks’ 2014 season. Today is also the day the Parks Department inexplicably began putting up fencing for a capital improvement project with no notice to the community and despite our permits for tonight’s event. How will this effect the screening? Well, thankfully, things were worked out in a mad rush this morning and we can still use the pier, albeit in a constrained fashion, but the larger question on many people’s minds is how does this effect the community in the long term? If you’re a Red Hooker and frustrated by the fact that this is the second park in our neighborhood this year to be fenced off with seemingly no public notice or community involvement–and no timeline for how long we’re being denied access–there are ways to get involved. Council Member Carlos Menchaca is already on the case (you can read his statement here) but it can’t hurt to contact his office and add your voice to the chorus. And several residents have formed a group to try to gain a voice with the parks department. More info here.

In the meantime, come out tonight, enjoy the film, have some great food, support our sponsors, and let’s close the season right!

Neighborhood Choice: ON THE WATERFRONT . . . coming 8/26!

24 Aug

brando

It’s hard to believe but this tuesday is our final film of the 2014 series– and it’s also the one that you, the audience, voted for! Our Neighborhood Choice this season is Elia Kazan’s 1954 classic ON THE WATERFRONT. Set in Red Hook, but filmed in Hoboken, ON THE WATERFRONT is based on a series of Pulitzer-Prize winning articles by Malcolm Johnson that examined the crime-riddled world of the New York docks. The film stars Marlon Brando as  the once-promising boxer Terry Malone as he attempts to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, and also features Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, and, in her big-screen debut, Eva Marie Saint. It was nominated for a dozen Academy Awards, and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Brando, and Best Supporting Actress for Saint.

ON THE WATERFRONT is brought to you by MOVERS NOT SHAKERS and RED HOOK LOBSTER POUND, who will be serving their extraordinary lobster rolls (both Connecticut and Maine styles–$16), Red Hook Dawgs ($4), and Cape Cod Chips ($2). Plus as always, Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies will be open late across the parking lot and selling their tarts, pies, and swingles, King Leche Cremes will be on hand with their hand-crafted goats milk ice cream, and Heba Deli will be serving beverages. So come on down and celebrate the end of summer in style!

MADAGASCAR tonight . . . at Atelier Roquette!

12 Aug

With heavy thunderstorms predicted for tonight and a coastal flood warning in effect, we’re going to move it, move it on over to Atelier Roquette for this evening’s screening of MADAGASCAR! But never fear, Icehouse will still be on hand, serving pulled pork, cole slaw, and mac cheese for dinner. The ladies of Home/Made will have beer and wine available. And King Leche Cremes will also be there selling their wonderful goat milk ice cream bars for the kids, in flavors that include Blushing Grasshopper, Chocolate, White Chocolate, and Vanilla with Mixed Berries. Sweet! (Literally!!)

Special Bonus Short at Tonight’s Screening!

5 Aug

2-Wooden%20Hands

In addition to tonight’s screening of PARIS IS BURNING, our friends at the African Film Festival are sharing Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania’s 2013 short WOODEN HAND with us. Set in Tunis, the film follows the adventures of a young girl named Amira who decides she’ll do anything to avoid going to school that day–including superglueing her hands to a chair! This charming, funny, and visually lush film will start the evening’s festivities off, so be there by 8:30 if you want to catch its al fresco premiere. The main attraction will follow immediately thereafter! See you at the pier…

Ok kiddies, this ones for you! This tuesday at Valentino Pier, Red Hook Flicks is presenting HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. Where do the world’s monsters go for some R&R and a much-needed break from humankind? Chairs and blankets are welcome

We’re super excited about tomorrow night’s screening of HUSTLE & FLOW and our fingers are crossed that mother nature will throw us a bone and get all this rain out of her system early. In the meantime, we figured we’d review some pertinent particulars in case you were wondering:

  1. Quiet dogs are welcome.
  2. Lawn chairs are allowed but must be kept to the back of the seating area. Please be courteous.
  3. No drinking. The cops do ticket. (Seriously.)
  4. This last one’s not really a rule per se, just something to make note of since we get asked about it on a regular basis: there are no bathrooms so plan accordingly. ; (
