MAJOR LEAGUE . . . coming 7/16!

14 Jul

Time to fight fire with fire: since the heat shows no sign of letting up this week, we’re just going to have to bring some of our own. Come on down to the pier this Tuesday for MAJOR LEAGUE, starring Charlie Sheen as a myopic pitcher with a 101 MPH fastball alongside Tom Berringer, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes, as they try to pull the Cleveland Indians out of an epic losing streak.

Rene Russo and Bob Uecker also star in David S. Ward’s comedy classic, which is brought to us this week thanks to the sponsorship of Dry Dock Wine + Spirits and Fort Defiance. Wondering what’s on deck for dinner on Tuesday? BLTs, tomato salad, potato salad, and, of course, Cracker Jacks, all courtesy of Fort D.

So gather up your rum for Jobu and we’ll see you at the pier!

FERRIS BUELLER’S DAY OFF . . . coming 7/11!

7 Jul

We know you’re still recovering from your red-white-and-blue, gunpowder-hotdogs-and apple-pie hangover–not to mention the rude reality of returning to work–but don’t despair! While one celebration has ended, another is just beginning. This Tuesday marks the first night in the eight week party that is Red Hook Flicks’ Movies on the Pier and we’re kicking things off right with a John Hughes classic: Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. While a career-making film for Matthew Broderick as the titular proto-slacker, the film also stars a veritable who’s who of eighties Hollywood, including: Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jeffrey Jones, Jennifer Grey, Ben Stein, and Charlie Sheen.

Ferris Bueller is brought to you via the generous support of DRY DOCK WINE + SPIRITS and FORT DEFIANCE. Fort D will be on deck that night serving skillet-fried buttermilk chicken, cheddar biscuits, coleslaw, and bread and butter pickles ($13 for the combo); and, as always, Steve’s Key Lime Pies will be open across the parking lot slinging their signature pies and swingles. KingLeche Cremes returns with their goat’s milk ice cream bars and popcorn. And this year Dolce Brooklyn will be gracing us with their handmade gelato and sorbetto.

So, come hungry people and we’ll see you on the pier! Chick chicka chick-ahhh….

ALIENS . . . coming 8/30!

28 Aug

aliens-sigourney-weavor_610_0

This Tuesday is our final movie of the season and we’re going out like gangbusters with ALIENS! It’s hard to believe ALIENS turns 30 this year. It’s one of the rare sequels that stands up to the original, in no small part because rather than trying to ape the moody, deliberate thriller of Ridley Scott’s original classic, James Cameron smartly went for a complete tonal shift with this action-packed sci-fi/horror tour-de-force. What both films do share, of course, is one of the great screen heroines of all time: Sigourney Weaver’s kick-ass Ellen Ripley. Joining her is Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, Bill Paxton, and Lance Henriksen. You don’t want to miss it.

ALIENS is brought to you by DRY DOCK and FORT DEFIANCE, who will be at the park serving dinner alongside Walter Youngblood’s KingLeche Cremes goats milk ice cream bars. Steve’s Key Lime Pies will stay open late for us serving tarts, pies, swingles, and limeades; and as a special treat for closing night Red Hook’s own Dolce Brooklyn will be there with their handcrafted gelato. It’s going to be dessert heaven.

See you at the pier!

WHEN WE WERE KINGS . . . coming 8/4!

2 Aug

MuhammadAliFistForget SOUTHPAW, join us this Tuesday for one of the greatest boxing films of all time, WHEN WE WERE KINGS.

Leon Gast’s decades-in-the-making documentary chronicles the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight championship fight between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, held in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1974. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary, the film also features James Brown, B.B. King, Don King, George Plimpton, Norman Mailer, and Spike Lee.

WHEN WE WERE KINGS is presented by DRY DOCK WINE + SPIRITS and FORT DEFIANCE. Dinner is courtesy of Fort D this week and they will be serving cold fried chicken fingers with moambe sauce (a spicy peanut sauce that forms the basis of Chicken moambe–the national dish of the DRC!), coleslaw, and potato salad–just $12. And Steve’s Key Lime will be staying open late as usual to dish out their delicious tarts and swingles.

This is going to be a good one folks, so let’s hear it: “Ali boma ye! Ali boma ye!” And we’ll see you at the pier.

HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA . . . coming 7/22!

20 Jul

hotelT

Ok kiddies, this ones for you! This tuesday at Valentino Pier, Red Hook Flicks is presenting HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA. Where do the world’s monsters go for some R&R and a much-needed break from humankind? Hotel Transylvania of course–Dracula’s lavish, five-star, monsters-only resort! But when a young man wanders in looking for a room and accidentally falls in love with Dracula’s daughter, chaos ensues.

Featuring the voices of Adam Sandler, Andy Samberg, Kevin James, Molly Shannon, Steve Buscemi and David Spade, among others, HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA is presented to you by FORT DEFIANCE and DRY DOCK WINE + SPIRITS! The good folks at Fort D will be on hand serving a delicious dinner of vermicelli with mung bean sprouts, savoy cabbage, carrot, mint, cilantro and Fort Defiance’s signature noodle sauce. And Steve’s Key Lime will of course be open across the parking lot on Van Dyke Street serving their delicious pies, tarts, and swingles. And beverages will be available from our friends at Heba Deli. See you at the pier!

STAND BY ME . . . Coming 7/9

2 Jul

Stand By Me 1

UPDATE: I swear we look forward to the food each year as much as the films, and the menu from Fort Defiance is finally in hand–Huzzah! For our screening of Stand By Me, Fort D will be serving BLTs made with organic tomatoes and Neuske’s bacon ($8), as well as their dynamite cold brew iced coffee ($3); and home-made gingerade, lemonade, and iced tea (all $2.50).

And don’t forget, if you want a sweet treat to round things off Steve’s Key Lime, located in the parking lot just behind the screening area, will be open late selling all their pies, tarts, and swingles. I can’t imagine anything that would take the sting out of this excessive heat quite like a chocolate-covered, frozen, mini key lime tart on a stick. Oh my!

****

I know you’ve all got the 4th on your minds but, let’s ponder the real official start of summer, taking place next week: that’s right, Movies on the Pier are back! And after the year Red Hook has had, is there a better film to kick the season off with than Stand By Me? Bask in the eighties goodness for a moment: Corey Feldman, River Phoenix, Wil Wheaton, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jerry O’Connell in one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever made. (Yes, that’s right, Stand By Me was adapted from a King novella called The Body, which appeared in the same collection as Rita Hayworth and  Shawshank Redemption. Clearly King was on a roll with those two.)

Stand By Me is brought to you by Fort Defiance and Dry Dock Wine + Spirits. Fort D will be on site selling dinner, Steve’s Key Lime will throw open the doors to their new space–conveniently located at the end of Van Dyke Street, just outside the entrance to Coffey Park–and have all of their delicious pies, tarts, and swingles available, and as always we’ll have water and soda for sale, as well.

Now who’s bringing the cherry flavored Pez?

LOST BOYS…Tonight!

10 Jul

“One thing about living in Santa Carla I never could stomach, all the damn vampires” — Grandpa.

Lost Boys night is finally here, and the weather promises to be glorious down at Valentino Pier.

The Lost Boys starts screening at 8:30 p.m. (or as close to that as possible, depending on sundown). But before hand, we’ll be showing a few old Popeye cartoons courtesy of Sunny’s Bar.

Come hungry. Our sponsors, Fort Defiance and Dry Dock, are offering a Lost Boys-themed dinner; plus there’s popcorn from Home/Made and key lime tarts from Steve’s Key Lime Pies.

Just remember these few rules:

1. There is no bathroom on site. The nearest one is at Fairway. Plan accordingly.

2. No drinking. Really. The cops ticket.

3. No bikes on the lawn; lock them up on the fence.

3. Dogs are welcome, if quiet/on leash. (We don’t want to ask you to leave, but if your dog barks, we will.)

4. Lawn chairs only at back of lawn – don’t block people sitting on blankets.

Other than that, have fun with vampires that don’t sparkle.

LOST BOYS are coming…7/10

5 Jul

I still believe…

That’s right, the Coreys and Keifer Sutherland will be on the big screen to kick off the Red Hook Flicks season.

Join us Tuesday, July 10, at Valentino Pier for the 1987 classic, LOST BOYS. Film rolls at 8:30 p.m., but come early to see the Popeye shorts and get dinner from our sponsors.

Fort Defiance and Dry Dock Wine + Spirits will be serving up a Lost Boys-themed dinner … in Chinese takeout cartons!

A few rules:

  1. Quiet dogs are welcome.
  2. Lawn chairs are allowed but must be kept to the back of the seating area. Please be courteous.
  3. No drinking. The cops do ticket.

Always remember: Sleep all day. Party all night. Never grow old. Never die. It’s fun to be a vampire.

August 30: PUMP UP THE VOLUME

29 Aug

Talk hard!

We’re still planning to show PUMP UP THE VOLUME tomorrow night (August 30) despite Hurricane Irene’s best intentions to shut down Valentino Pier.

The ground is drying out and the weather is promising to be gorgeous!

The evening’s sponsor is FORT DEFIANCE, and owner St. John Frizell is serving up a tasty-sounding menu: cold fried chicken, coleslaw, lemonade and sweet tea. Mmmm.

As always, we’ll have popcorn from Home/Made for sale for just $1 — and all proceeds benefit the films series. No popcorn tonight. It’s been a crazy week for us all down here in Red Hook!

Hope to see you all down in Zone A on Tuesday night!

And here’s St. John doing his best Christian Slater impression — with cocktail shakers!
