We’ve got game–thanks largely to our sponsors at HOME/MADE who have made their gorgeous event space, Atelier Roquette available to us for foul weather screenings. In a perfect world, would we prefer to watch the sun set over Valentino Pier while enjoying cool breezes off the water and waiting for the evening’s film to begin? Of course! But this is about the best rain location we could ask for–and they have a liquor license. Small bonuses, you know? So while we keep our eyes to the sky for the next screening, you can rest assured that the show will most awesomely go on–rain or shine.
HIGH FIDELITY . . . coming 8/11!
9 AugWhat came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?
Decide for yourself this Tuesday at the pier when John Cusack will wax philosophical about life, love, and music in Stephen Frears’ adaptation of Nick Hornby’s best-selling novel, HIGH FIDELITY! Also starring Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Cusack, Lili Taylor, Tim Robbins, and a walk-on part by The Boss, HIGH FIDELITY is brought to you by PICKETT FURNITURE and BROOKLYN ICE HOUSE. ICE HOUSE will be on hand serving up smoked pulled-pork sandwiches($6), and mac & cheese ($4), and sodas and water; and STEVE’S KEY LIME PIES will be staying open late to serve their pies, swingles, and limeades.
See you at the pier!
WHEN WE WERE KINGS . . . coming 8/4!
2 Aug
Forget SOUTHPAW, join us this Tuesday for one of the greatest boxing films of all time, WHEN WE WERE KINGS.
Leon Gast’s decades-in-the-making documentary chronicles the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight championship fight between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, held in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1974. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary, the film also features James Brown, B.B. King, Don King, George Plimpton, Norman Mailer, and Spike Lee.
WHEN WE WERE KINGS is presented by DRY DOCK WINE + SPIRITS and FORT DEFIANCE. Dinner is courtesy of Fort D this week and they will be serving cold fried chicken fingers with moambe sauce (a spicy peanut sauce that forms the basis of Chicken moambe–the national dish of the DRC!), coleslaw, and potato salad–just $12. And Steve’s Key Lime will be staying open late as usual to dish out their delicious tarts and swingles.
This is going to be a good one folks, so let’s hear it: “Ali boma ye! Ali boma ye!” And we’ll see you at the pier.
See you all at Valentino Pier tonight. The weather looks clear.
BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA . . . coming 7/28!
22 JulJack Burton is a reasonable guy who’s just experienced some very unreasonable things, not least of which involves getting dragged into an epic battle between the supernatural forces of good and evil–and all so his friend can save his beloved from a forced wedding to a very wicked and immortal sorcerer named Lo Pan.
Kurt Russell stars alongside a pre-SEX AND THE CITY Kim Cattrall, and Kate Burton in John Carpenter’s cult classic, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Special thanks to our sponsors for the evening, Find Home Furnishings and PokPok Ny for bringing Carpenter’s modern-day western to the pier this Tuesday. PokPok will be there serving Khao Man Som Tam (green papaya salad served with coconut rice, sweet shredded pork, fried shallots and cilantro–just $10, and the favorite dish of evil sorcerers everywhere, or so we hear); and Steve’s Key Lime, as always, will stay open late so you can partake of their tarty goodness.
See you at the pier!
FANTASTIC MR. FOX . . . coming 7/21!
18 JulUPDATE: In case you’re wondering folks, we’re staying at the pier for tonight’s screening!

Wes Anderson brings his unique brand of fabulist realism to Roald Dahl’s childhood classic. Nominated for Best Animated Feature at both the Oscars and the Golden Globes, the film features the voices of George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Bill Murray, Jason Schwartzman, Willen Defoe, Own Wilson, and for you Pulp fans out there, Jarvis Cocker.
Special thanks to our sponsors for the evening, Waterfront Kitchens and Mark’s Pizza! Mark’s will be selling slices (plain, pepperoni, and supreme) at the park, and Steve’s Key Lime as always will stay open late so you can partake of their tarty goodness.
See you at the pier!
COMING TO AMERICA moving to Atelier tonight!
14 JulWe try very hard not to move the film if we don’t have to. Unfortunately the forecast for tonight is just too iffy and the ground at the pier is already wet from showers earlier today, so we are officially moving tonight’s screening of COMING TO AMERICA to Atelier Roquette. More information here: https://redhookflicks.com/rain/
The Lobster Pound will be set-up serving lobster rolls three ways and hotdogs and the as-always perk about moving the screening to Atelier is that wine and beer will be available for sale as well!
COMING TO AMERICA . . . coming 7/14!
10 JulThis Eddie Murphy classic answers the age-old question: Where does a poor-little-rich crown prince of Zamunda go to find a bride? Why, Queens of course! (And more precisely, a now unrecognizable Long Island City–but, hey, back then that’s where you went for all your romantic needs, not to mention fast food franchise rip-offs.) Murphy re-teams with TRADING PLACES director John Landis and stars alongside James Earl Jones and Arsenio Hall in this 80s comedy classic, brought to you this Tuesday by MOVERS NOT SHAKERS and RED HOOK LOBSTER POUND! The Pound’s food truck, Big Red, will be on site serving three kinds of lobster rolls ($17 each), hot dogs ($5), and more; Steve’s Key Lime will stay open late slinging their tarts and swingles; and F & M Bagels will be on hand with beverages. So bust out your Soul Glo, cue up your Sexual Chocolate records, and we’ll see you at the pier!
JURASSIC PARK officially a go at Valentino Pier!
7 JulWe’re not going to let a 20% chance of passing showers sometime before 7:45 PM spoil our fun–or our opening night! We’ll see you at Valentino Pier tonight at 8:30 PM for JURASSIC PARK. Bring a blanket and some chairs (and maybe a garbage bag or two if you’re opposed to a little damp ground).
RAIN?–Well, that’s why we have a back up plan!
7 JulWe’re an outdoor film series, so we’re always doing the no-rain dance and wishing for clear skies. And today we’ll be watching the forecast closely, hoping we can keep opening night at the pier.
But, if the heavens open up it’s no reason to get down as we also we happen to have an awesome rain location. Our friends and sponsors over at HOME/MADE make their super-cool catering space, Atelier Roquette (63 Commerce Street, between Van Brunt and Richards–just down the block from Stumptown), available to us for inclement evenings.
With couches to lounge on and plenty of room to spread out your blankets and beach chairs, it’s our home away from home when the weather gods send us a foul night. And did we mention the added bonus of wine and beer to wash down those delicious dinners from our sponsors? Well, it’s almost enough to make you pray for a little rain every now and then! So watch this space for updates on where to meet tonight. We’ll make the call by 6 PM.
