But never fear, Icehouse will still be on hand, serving pulled pork, cole slaw, and mac cheese for dinner. The ladies of Home/Made will have beer and wine available. And King Leche Cremes will also be there selling their wonderful goat milk ice cream bars for the kids, in flavors that include Blushing Grasshopper, Chocolate, White Chocolate, and Vanilla with Mixed Berries. 5 Aug

2-Wooden%20Hands

In addition to tonight’s screening of PARIS IS BURNING, our friends at the African Film Festival are sharing Tunisian filmmaker Kaouther Ben Hania’s 2013 short WOODEN HAND with us. Set in Tunis, the film follows the adventures of a young girl named Amira who decides she’ll do anything to avoid going to school that day–including superglueing her hands to a chair! This charming, funny, and visually lush film will start the evening’s festivities off, so be there by 8:30 if you want to catch its al fresco premiere. The main attraction will follow immediately thereafter! See you at the pier…

Paris-Is-Burning-Movie-Still-1

Come find out where Madonna co-opted voguing from this tuesday at the pier with PARIS IS BURNING. Jennie Livingston’s award-winning 1990 documentary about New York City’s drag ball culture explores the lives of Latin- and African-American drag queens in their quest for a different kind of realness–and the way they redefine the meaning of identity and family along the way.

PARIS IS BURNING is presented by FIND HOME FURNISHINGS and POK POK, who will be on hand serving a fierce Coconut Curry–Khanom Jiin Naam Phrik, to be exact: thin rice vermicelli topped with a thick southern Thai curry of coconut cream, prawns, and toasted mung beans, just $8!–plus their signature House Roasted Peanuts for $4. Dessert by King Leche Cremes and Steve’s Key Lime Pie, and beverages available from Heba Deli.

We’ll be throwing shade down at the pier at 8:30–see you there!

HUSTLE & FLOW is a go tonight at Atelier Roquette!

15 Jul

hustleflowWell, the weather out there is truly frightening–at least to those of us who have to take those coastal flood warnings seriously–so we’re officially moving operations to our rain location: Atelier Roquette. Show starts at 8:30, but arrive early so you can grab some terrific eats from Home/Made, including citrus ricotta on grilled filone and marinated goat cheese on pizza bianca. And if you’ve been missing the addictive garlic butter popcorn they used to serve during movie nights at the pier, then rejoice because they’ll have that back on deck for tonight! And then there’s the extr- special door prize for having to move the whole thing indoors: BOOZE! Beer and wine will be available. Doors open at 7 PM.

DAZED AND CONFUSED . . . coming 7/8!

6 Jul

DazedMMRAIN UPDATE: It’s looking a little iffy for later in the evening but since DAZED AND CONFUSED is only 90 minutes and we know how much you all love to be outside, we’re going to roll the dice and stick with it at the pier. That said, we are going to start PROMPTLY at 8:30. So be there early and bring some rain gear!

Long before the McConaissance that brought us MAGIC MIKE, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, the spectacular weirdness of TRUE DETECTIVE and one previously inconceivable Oscar win, Matthew McConaughey was  just a young Texan with aspirations of stardom and a penchant for pot and naked bongo playing. This Tuesday we kick off the 2014 summer movie series with the film that gave McConaughey his first big break: Richard Linklater’s 1993 cult-classic DAZED AND CONFUSED! Come watch The Shirtless One wax philosophic about high school girls and why you gotta just keep on livin’ alongside Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, and an uncredited Renee Zellweger–and catch a preview of Richard Linklater’s upcoming film BOYHOOD at the same time!

DAZED AND CONFUSED is brought to you by Red Hook Bait and Tackle and The Good Fork, who will be on hand with two delicious choices for dinner: vermicelli with Early Girl Farm vegetables, white soy ponzu, and shredded chicken ($7) or the highly-stoner-approved mac cheese with bacon and cheetos ($5)! Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the way selling their delicious tarts and swingles and our friends from Scout’s Honor Ice Cream are making the trip down from Vermont to bring us their amazing, hand-crafted ice-cream sandwiches and ice pops.

Fundraiser Update: BREAKING NIGHT screens this sunday

17 May

breaking night

At this Sunday’s fundraiser we have a couple of special shorts screening that we’re super excited about, including BREAKING NIGHT by Red Hook’s own Yolanda Ross. You might recognize Yolanda from her acting work on HBO’s TREME or on stage with New York’s Labrynth Theater Company.  BREAKING NIGHT, also starring Clarke Peters (THE WIRE, TREME),  is her directorial debut and won Best Short Film at last year’s San Diego Indie Film Festival.

We’re really honored that Yolanda’s sharing her work with us, so come on out to Bait and Tackle this Sunday at 5, have some great food from our sponsors, vote for Neighborhood Choice, find out what’s screening on the pier this summer, and see BREAKING NIGHT!

Summer is almost upon us and despite all the havoc wrought by Sandy to Red Hook in general, and our extraordinary sponsors in particular, Red Hook Flicks is rising from the floodwaters to bring you another season of summer films, sunsets on the water, and some seriously awesome local food. The film committee has been hard at work wrangling all the moving parts, so check back here in the coming weeks for information of our upcoming fundraiser on June 2nd, details on this year’s sponsors, and of course the big reveal of our 2013 schedule! See you at the pier . . .

Why We <3 Red Hook

Red Hook from kathryn schubert on Vimeo.

Check out this amazing video produced by RestoreRedHook.org. It beautifully explains what makes Red Hook special and how much damage the small-business owners suffered. It made me cry with love and appreciation over how remarkable our town is. There just aren’t words.

To help, consider giving to the local business community, most of whom are Red Hook Flicks sponsors. Here’s a list of donation sites.

– Rebuild Sunny’s

– Rebuild Home/Made

— Rebuild Steve’s Authentic Key Lime

– Rebuild the Bait & Tackle

– Rebuild the Good Fork

– Rebuild Fort Defiance

– Rebuild the Red Hook Lobster Pound

– Rebuild Metal & Thread

– Rebuild Added Value, our urban farm

– Donate to Restore Red Hook, the local business fund that they all created together

Rebuild Red Hook

10 Nov

Dear Red Hook Flicks supporters:

For the past three seasons, the local businesses of Red Hook have generously given their time and money to make our film series happen. We’ve had a magical time.

Now they need our help.

Most of our sponsors were flooded during Sandy and are having to rebuild from scratch. No power, no heat. Refrigerators gone. Everything destroyed. It’s going to be expensive and they can’t count on insurance.  (Here’s why.)

So please think about donating to the various fundraising campaigns to rebuild our neighborhood and our vibrant local businesses, which are the heart and soul of Red Hook.

— Rebuild the Bait & Tackle

— Rebuild the Good Fork

— Rebuild Fort Defiance

— Rebuild the Red Hook Lobster Pound

— Rebuild Metal & Thread

— Donate Restore Red Hook, the local business fund that they all created together

Thank you.
