Paris-Is-Burning-Movie-Still-1

Come find out where Madonna co-opted voguing from this tuesday at the pier with PARIS IS BURNING. Jennie Livingston’s award-winning 1990 documentary about New York City’s drag ball culture explores the lives of Latin- and African-American drag queens in their quest for a different kind of realness–and the way they redefine the meaning of identity and family along the way.

PARIS IS BURNING is presented by FIND HOME FURNISHINGS and POK POK, who will be on hand serving a fierce Coconut Curry–Khanom Jiin Naam Phrik, to be exact: thin rice vermicelli topped with a thick southern Thai curry of coconut cream, prawns, and toasted mung beans, just $8!–plus their signature House Roasted Peanuts for $4. Dessert by King Leche Cremes and Steve’s Key Lime Pie, and beverages available from Heba Deli.

We’ll be throwing shade down at the pier at 8:30–see you there!

Grüne Tomaten / Fried Green Tomatoes

I found out what the secret to life is: friends. Best friends.

This tuesday at the pier we bring you FRIED GREEN TOMATOES, a touching look at two generations of female friendship (and maybe a little something more…ahem). Based on the book FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE by Fannie Flag, the 1992 film stars Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louse Parker, Cicely Tyson, Chris O’Donnell, and Jessica Tandy, who received a best supporting actress nomination for her performance as Ninny Threadgoode.

This week’s movie is brought to you by THE O’CONNELL ORGANIZATION and HOMETOWN BBQ. The good pitmasters at Hometown have come up with a special menu for the evening: smoked turkey and fried green tomato BLTs with siracha aioli, just $9–yum! And as always Steve’s Key Lime Pies will be open late selling their tarts, pies, and swingles; King Leche Cremes will be on hand with their handcrafted and super delicious goat’s milk ice cream bars in Red Velvet, Spiced Chocolate, and specially for this screening: Corn Bread! HUSTLE & FLOW is a go tonight at Atelier Roquette!

15 Jul

hustleflowWell, the weather out there is truly frightening–at least to those of us who have to take those coastal flood warnings seriously–so we’re officially moving operations to our rain location: Atelier Roquette. Show starts at 8:30, but arrive early so you can grab some terrific eats from Home/Made, including citrus ricotta on grilled filone and marinated goat cheese on pizza bianca. And if you’ve been missing the addictive garlic butter popcorn they used to serve during movie nights at the pier, then rejoice because they’ll have that back on deck for tonight! And then there’s the extr- special door prize for having to move the whole thing indoors: BOOZE! Beer and wine will be available. Doors open at 7 PM.

A few thoughts while we watch the skies . . .

14 Jul

Chairs and blankets are welcome

We’re super excited about tomorrow night’s screening of HUSTLE & FLOW and our fingers are crossed that mother nature will throw us a bone and get all this rain out of her system early. In the meantime, we figured we’d review some pertinent particulars in case you were wondering:

  1. Quiet dogs are welcome.
  2. Lawn chairs are allowed but must be kept to the back of the seating area. Please be courteous.
  3. No drinking. The cops do ticket. (Seriously.)
  4. This last one’s not really a rule per se, just something to make note of since we get asked about it on a regular basis: there are no bathrooms so plan accordingly. ; (

HUSTLE & FLOW . . . coming 7/15!

13 Jul

hustleflowLet’s just get this out of the way right now: It’s hard out there for a pimp–and this tuesday at Valentino Pier, you’ll find out why. Terrence Howard received an Academy-Award nomination for his performance as Djay, a Memphis hustler and pimp chasing his dream of being an emcee in Craig Brewer’s HUSTLE & FLOW. Produced by John Singleton, and also starring Ludacris and Isaac Hayes, the film’s ubiquitous ear worm of a track “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” nabbed an Oscar for Three 6 Mafia, making them the first hip hop group to win an Academy Award for Best Song.

HUSTLE & FLOW is brought to you by Sunny’s Bar and Home/Made, who will be on hand serving a menu of citrus ricotta on grilled filone, marinated goat cheese on pizza bianca, peach lemonade, garlic butter popcorn, and Home/Made focaccia. And as always, Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the parking lot and serving their delicious  pies and swingles. The forecast is once again looking unstable, so check here on the day of for updates. We’ll make the call on whether we’ll move to our rain location by  6 P.M.  Otherwise, see you at the pier!

Fundraiser Update: BREAKING NIGHT screens this sunday

17 May

breaking night

At this Sunday’s fundraiser we have a couple of special shorts screening that we’re super excited about, including BREAKING NIGHT by Red Hook’s own Yolanda Ross. You might recognize Yolanda from her acting work on HBO’s TREME or on stage with New York’s Labrynth Theater Company.  BREAKING NIGHT, also starring Clarke Peters (THE WIRE, TREME),  is her directorial debut and won Best Short Film at last year’s San Diego Indie Film Festival.

We’re really honored that Yolanda’s sharing her work with us, so come on out to Bait and Tackle this Sunday at 5, have some great food from our sponsors, vote for Neighborhood Choice, find out what’s screening on the pier this summer, and see BREAKING NIGHT!
