It’s hard to believe but this tuesday is our final film of the 2014 series– and it’s also the one that you, the audience, voted for! Our Neighborhood Choice this season is Elia Kazan’s 1954 classic ON THE WATERFRONT. Set in Red Hook, but filmed in Hoboken, ON THE WATERFRONT is based on a series of Pulitzer-Prize winning articles by Malcolm Johnson that examined the crime-riddled world of the New York docks. The film stars Marlon Brando as  the once-promising boxer Terry Malone as he attempts to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, and also features Karl Malden, Lee J. Cobb, Rod Steiger, and, in her big-screen debut, Eva Marie Saint. It was nominated for a dozen Academy Awards, and won eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Brando, and Best Supporting Actress for Saint.

ON THE WATERFRONT is brought to you by MOVERS NOT SHAKERS and RED HOOK LOBSTER POUND, who will be serving their extraordinary lobster rolls (both Connecticut and Maine styles–$16), Red Hook Dawgs ($4), and Cape Cod Chips ($2). Plus as always, Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies will be open late across the parking lot and selling their tarts, pies, and swingles, King Leche Cremes will be on hand with their hand-crafted goats milk ice cream, and Heba Deli will be serving beverages. So come on down and celebrate the end of summer in style!

And King Leche Cremes will also be there selling their wonderful goat milk ice cream bars for the kids, in flavors that include Blushing Grasshopper, Chocolate, White Chocolate, and Vanilla with Mixed Berries. Paris-Is-Burning-Movie-Still-1

Come find out where Madonna co-opted voguing from this tuesday at the pier with PARIS IS BURNING. Jennie Livingston’s award-winning 1990 documentary about New York City’s drag ball culture explores the lives of Latin- and African-American drag queens in their quest for a different kind of realness–and the way they redefine the meaning of identity and family along the way.

PARIS IS BURNING is presented by FIND HOME FURNISHINGS and POK POK, who will be on hand serving a fierce Coconut Curry–Khanom Jiin Naam Phrik, to be exact: thin rice vermicelli topped with a thick southern Thai curry of coconut cream, prawns, and toasted mung beans, just $8!–plus their signature House Roasted Peanuts for $4. Based on the book FRIED GREEN TOMATOES AT THE WHISTLE STOP CAFE by Fannie Flag, the 1992 film stars Kathy Bates, Mary Stuart Masterson, Mary-Louse Parker, Cicely Tyson, Chris O’Donnell, and Jessica Tandy, who received a best supporting actress nomination for her performance as Ninny Threadgoode.

HUSTLE & FLOW . . . coming 7/15!

13 Jul

hustleflowLet’s just get this out of the way right now: It’s hard out there for a pimp–and this tuesday at Valentino Pier, you’ll find out why. Terrence Howard received an Academy-Award nomination for his performance as Djay, a Memphis hustler and pimp chasing his dream of being an emcee in Craig Brewer’s HUSTLE & FLOW. Produced by John Singleton, and also starring Ludacris and Isaac Hayes, the film’s ubiquitous ear worm of a track “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” nabbed an Oscar for Three 6 Mafia, making them the first hip hop group to win an Academy Award for Best Song.

HUSTLE & FLOW is brought to you by Sunny’s Bar and Home/Made, who will be on hand serving a menu of citrus ricotta on grilled filone, marinated goat cheese on pizza bianca, peach lemonade, garlic butter popcorn, and Home/Made focaccia. And as always, Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the parking lot and serving their delicious  pies and swingles. The forecast is once again looking unstable, so check here on the day of for updates. We’ll make the call on whether we’ll move to our rain location by  6 P.M.  Otherwise, see you at the pier!
