Fundraiser Update: BREAKING NIGHT screens this sunday

17 May

breaking night

At this Sunday’s fundraiser we have a couple of special shorts screening that we’re super excited about, including BREAKING NIGHT by Red Hook’s own Yolanda Ross. You might recognize Yolanda from her acting work on HBO’s TREME or on stage with New York’s Labrynth Theater Company.  BREAKING NIGHT, also starring Clarke Peters (THE WIRE, TREME),  is her directorial debut and won Best Short Film at last year’s San Diego Indie Film Festival.

We’re really honored that Yolanda’s sharing her work with us, so come on out to Bait and Tackle this Sunday at 5, have some great food from our sponsors, vote for Neighborhood Choice, find out what’s screening on the pier this summer, and see BREAKING NIGHT!

2014 Fundraiser–Sunday, Sunday, Sunday!

12 May

Valentino pier Red Hook

It was 79 degrees today–79! Summer was clearly sending a little salvo our way but that’s ok because over here at Red Hook Flicks, we’ve had Summer in our sights for quite some time. In fact, the line up for this year’s movies on the pier has been selected and we can’t wait to share them with you at our annual fundraiser! Come out and join us and our amazing sponsors this Sunday, May 18 at 5 p.m. at Red Hook Bait and Tackle. There’ll be food from our sponsors and we’ll unveil this summer’s slate of films. Plus there will be special screenings and a raffle for a prize package from Brooklyn Slate.

And perhaps MOST importantly, you get to vote on this season’s NEIGHBORHOOD CHOICE film! Last year you selected Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead.  What will it be this year? Well, that’s up to you. $1 per vote. As always, ballot stuffing is highly encouraged!

$10 suggested donation … but all are welcome regardless of ability to pay.

See you this Sunday at 5 p.m.!

RAIN %$@?! . . . and also, hey, we’ve got BBQ!

13 Aug

UPDATE: RAIN? We’re not afraid of your stinking rain! We are a go at the pier for tonight! The sun is out and things are drying up and we can’t stand the thought of not sitting outside and watching the sun set. Worried about the damp? C’mon, you’re a New Yorker! A Brooklynite!! A Red Hooker!!! Besides, a groundcloth or garbage bag under your blanket does wonders and we’ve got BBQ to keep you warm.

***
Really!? Another rain out? It’s possible . . . The weather is looking a little iffy to say the least, so what happens if it rains? Why we move the whole thing to Red Hook Bait and Tackle. Check back here for further details. We’ll make the official call by 6:00 PM tonight.

But rain or shine, one thing is for certain: aside from some frozen-tundra terror courtesy of John Carpenter’s THE THING, we will have some dynamite BBQ for dinner thanks to our friend and sponsor Hometown BBQ. The good boys of Hometown will be on hand serving smoked jalapeno and cheddar sausage with spicy whisky sour pickles and potato salad! Delicious.

THE THING . . . coming 8/13!

10 Aug

the-thing_1982

I don’t know what the hell’s in there, but it’s weird and pissed off, whatever it is.

Fire up your flamethrowers and grab your dynamite because this tuesday Red Hook Flicks brings you THE THING–John Carpenter’s 1982 boy-meets-dog, dog-turns-out-to-be-a-blood-thirsty-shape-shifting-alien classic!

THE THING is brought to you by The O’Connell Organization and Hometown BBQ. For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting Hometown’s grand opening–us included!–you can sample some of their excellent smoked meaty goodness that night! King Leche Cremes will also be on hand serving their hand-crafted goat’s milk ice cream and Steve’s Key Lime will, as always, be open across the parking lot serving their tarts and swingles.  A girl could put on some serious pounds during a film series as deliciously fortified as this…

Film rolls at 8:30, (or as soon as it’s dark enough) and check back here if there’s any question of rain.

Otherwise, see you at the pier!

AKEELAH AND THE BEE . . . coming 8/6!

Tuesday’s Menu is Here!!!

Brooklyn Ice House will be on hand selling dinner this tuesday and you can choose between mac ‘n’ cheese or their delicious pulled pork sandwiches with cole slaw–each just $5!

Also on deck that night will be King Leche Cremes selling their amazing home-made goat’s milk icecream. The evening’s flavors include: Island Vanilla, Chocolate, and–for expectant mothers and non expectant others–Sweet Dill Pickle! ($4 each)

And, if your sweet tooth is hankering for something tart and creamy, Steve’s Key Lime  is open in their new space (follow the picnic tables, just behind the movie screen), selling thier tarts and swingles.

Really, who eats better than us?

***

Like Rocky for the middle-school nerd set, AKEELAH AND THE BEE stars Laurence Fishburne and Angela Bassett in the story of a young girl from South Central L. A. who  makes her way to the National Spelling Bee finals despite the disapproval of both her mother and her peers.

AKEELAH is brought to you by Sunny’s Bar and Brooklyn Ice House, who will be on site serving up some of their amazing BBQ.  Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the parking lot at the end of Van Dyke Street (just behind the screen) serving their tarts and swingles, and our concession stand will have water and soft drinks.

Things kick off at 8:30, or as soon as it’s dark enough, starting with a classic Popeye. And a gentle reminder: if you bring lawn chairs, please be kind and set up at the back or towards the sides so you don’t block others’ views.

See you at the pier!

STRICTLY BALLROOM . . . coming 7/30!

26 Jul

strictly ballroom

This Tuesday on the Pier, Baz Luhrmann’s first and possibly best film: STRICTLY BALLROOM!

The inaugural installment of his “Red Curtain Trilogy,” which went on to include ROMEO + JULIET and MOULIN ROUGE, STRICTLY BALLROOM is his lavish and laugh-out-loud funny send-up of Australian competitive dance culture. It’s like SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER by way of Christopher Guest. And you owe it to yourself to see this, if only to cleanse from your mind the mess that was GATSBY and remind yourself what an amazing filmmaker Luhrmann can be.

Our sponsors for the evening are Waterfront Kitchens and Mark’s Pizza, who will be on site serving fresh pizza by the slice. Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the way serving tarts and swingles, and our concession stand will have water, San Pellegrino, and more.

Film rolls at 8:30, or as soon as it’s dark enough, and a classic Popeye cartoon kicks things off.

Now, “Show me your Paso Doble!”

SHAFT (2000) . . . tonight at Bait and Tackle!

23 Jul

One of the tricky things about running an outdoor film series is making that all important rain call–and doing so with enough time to allow our food sponsor and projectionist to switch gears. So, even though things are all blue sky at the moment, the forecast has been looking unsettled enough for tonight (50% chance of thunderstorms plus a coastal flood warning in effect–and you know in Red Hook when it can flood, it will) that we’ve decided we need to move tonight’s festivities to Bait and Tackle.

We’ll kick things off with a classic Popeye short at 8:30 and then on to the main event: SHAFT (2000)! Dinner by Pok Pok (Green papaya salad with coconut rice, sweet shredded pork, fried shallots, and cilantro–$10) and a full bar of options to wash it down with. Now that’s not so bad, is it?

SHAFT (2000) . . . Tomorrow!

22 Jul

shaft2Tomorrow at 8:30 it’s SHAFT (2000)–and rain or shine the show will roll at 8:30 PM. Check back here for updates tomorrow afternoon but, if there are storm clouds on the horizon we’ll, as always, be setting up shop at the Bait & Tackle instead.

SHAFT is brought to us by Find Home Furnishing and our food sponsor this evening is Pok Pok Ny. So, while we all eagerly await the opening of Whisky Soda Lounge Ny–not to mention their new (and larger!) space on Columbia Street–we can chow down on some Khao Man Som Tom (Green papaya salad with coconut rice, sweet shredded pork, fried shallots, and cilantro–$10).  And, hey, you know what goes really well with spicy Thai food? Beer.

So, maybe a little rain won’t be a bad thing.

SHAFT (2000) . . . coming July 23!

19 Jul

The ultimate Bad M*th@ F*ck@, Samuel L. Jackson squares off against Christian Bale and Jeffrey Wright in John Singleton’s sequel to the 1971 blaxploitation classic. Richard Roundtree–the original Shaft–makes an appearance alongside Busta Rhymes, Toni Collette, and Vanessa Williams. Shut Your Mouth!

And if you’ve been dying to eat at PokPokNy but the lines have been getting you down then tuesday is your lucky night. SHAFT (2000) is brought to you by Find Home Furnishing and PokPok, who will be on site serving dinner that night. Check back here for menu updates as we have them.

Steve’s Key Lime will be open in their new space across the parking lot serving all their delicious tarts and swingles and we’ll have drinks at the concession stand.

Film rolls at 8:30 (or as soon as its dark enough). A classic Popeye short gets the whole thing started. See you at the pier!
