PURPLE RAIN . . . coming 7/19!

17 Jul

purple-rain

Dearly Beloved…

We lost Prince Rogers Nelson much too soon, and I’m sure many of you, like us, are still shedding a purple tear over his passing. So this week we pay tribute to Minneapolis’s favorite son with the movie that launched him into the stratosphere–PURPLE RAIN.  Starring Prince, Morris Day and the Time, Wendy, Lisa, and the rest of the Revolution, and introducing Apollonia, the loosely autobiographical film won an Oscar for Best Original Score and the accompanying album is widely cited as one of the greatest of all time and is without doubt Prince’s magnum opus.

PURPLE RAIN is brought to you by  Sunny’s and Home/Made, who will be on hand this week serving Home/Made ricotta on charred filone with fresh peaches, heirloom tomatoes, and basil; plus popcorn, lemonade, and special treats sure to make a dove cry. If that doesn’t sate you, Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies is open across the way selling their pies, tarts, and swingles, and KingLeche Cremes will be selling their hand-crafted goats milk ice-cream bars. So much goodness, it’s hard to wait! But hang tough children, Tuesday will be here before you know it.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK . . . coming 7/12!

9 Jul

raiders 2This Tuesday Red Hook Flicks kicks off the 2016 series with RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. Steven Spielberg’s homage to classic Saturday afternoon serial films, RAIDERS is often cited as one of the greatest movies of all time. Harrison Ford’s turn as as archaeologist-adventurer Indiana Jones helped solidify his rising star and adventure hero status as he outwits, out-whips, and out runs a host of nasty adversaries in a race to find the Ark of the Covenant before it falls into the hands of the Nazis.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK is presented by RED HOOK BAIT & TACKLE and THE GOOD FORK, and for dinner the good people of The Good Fork are serving a special White Asp Bowl in honor of Mr. Jones and his special relationship with serpents: chilled somen noodles with kimchi spiked chili sauce, asian pear, cucumbers, summer vegetables, and soft boiled egg–what better way to beat the heat? STEVE’S AUTHENTIC KEY LIME PIES will be staying open late as always to dish out their singular key lime pies, tarts, swingles, and limeade. (Seriously, you have not had key lime pie until you’ve had Steve’s.) And Walter Youngblood is back this season with KING LECHE CREMES, his hand-crafted goats milk ice-cream bars. Sweet! The show starts at 8:30–or just as soon as it’s dark enough. See you at the pier!

Movies on the Pier Are Almost Here!

24 Jun

raidersofthelostarkWe know what you’re thinking . . . it’s nearly July, and that means BBQs! Fireworks!! The opening of The Red Hook Pool!!! And perhaps most importantly–ok, maybe to us–Movies on the Pier begins!!!!

And, boy, do we have a great season opener this year: RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK  coming to you on July 12th. This is Spielberg and Harrison Ford at their finest. And we can’t wait to see what our friends over at The Good Fork are planning for dinner that night. In the meantime, we’re closing in on raising the funds necessary to cover our budget and bring you a full slate of eight great films this summer. We’ve got just $890 to go! To those of you who’ve shown their support already–we thank you! And for those of you who haven’t yet, we hope that if you’ve enjoyed watching a classic movie out on the waterfront on a hot summer night while eating amazing food from one of our fine local restaurants, then you’ll donate and help keep the series going.

Thanks to all and see you at the pier!

RED HOOK FLICKS 2016 SCHEDULE AND FUNDRAISER!

5 Jun

we-need-youFriends, we here at Red Hook Flicks are super excited for this summer’s series–not least of all because its our 10th anniversary of brining you outdoor movies in the park. And we have an amazing slate of films on deck this year–check them out here!–but we need your help to make it happen. Our costs have quadrupled in the last two years and with the support of our beloved sponsors we’re almost–but not quite–there. RHF needs to raise just $4,000 between now and July 12th to cover our projection fees–and that’s where you come in! We’ve launched a GoFundMe campaign to raise the funds. So, if you love watching a great move down on the pier while the breeze comes off the bay and the sun sets over Lady Liberty, won’t you give a few dollars to help keep the little-series-that-could going? It just wouldn’t be summer without it.

30 Aug

Goodfellas-Tribeca-Film-Festival-screening

“As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster. To me that was better than being president of the United States. To be a gangster was to own the world.”

We’ve got a doozey for you to close our this year’s film series, so come on down to the pier this Tuesday and ring out the end of Summer with Martin Scorsese’s mob classic, GOODFELLAS. Based on Nicholas Pileggi’s bestselling chronicle of the rise and fall of Lucchese crime-family associate Henry Hill, the film features a who’s-who of wise-guy stars including Robert De Niro, Joe Pesce, Ray Liotta, Paul Sorvino, and a pre-SOPRANOS Lorraine Bracco. Widely considered one of the greatest films of all times, GOODFELLAS received six Oscar nominations, with Joe Pesci bringing home Best Supporting Actor for his career-defining role as Tommy De Vito.

GOODFELLAS is being brought to you this Tuesday by by THE O’CONNELL ORGANIZATION and HOMETOWN BBQ. The goodfellas at HOMETOWN will be at the pier selling smoked Italian sausage with peppers, onions, and provolone on a hero with chips ($9) and lemonade. The-Bad-News-Bears

You voted and we listened! This year’s Neighborhood Choice is the 1976 comedy classic, starring Walter Matthau as Morris Buttermaker–a down-on-his-luck ex-minor-league ball player roped into coaching possibly the worst little league team of all time–and Tatum O’Neal as his unlikely protege Amanda Whurlizer.

THE BAD NEWS BEARS is Presented by Sunny’s Bar and Home/Made, who will be on hand selling their delicious focaccia and bruschetta, and as always Steve’s Key Lime will stay open late to bring you their tarts and swingles. See you at the pier!

THE INCREDIBLES . . . coming 8/18!

16 Aug

incredibles

When THE INCREDIBLES premiered in 2004, this winning satire of super hero films and suburban family values pretty much cemented Pixar’s status as the top animation house in the game, while proving irresistible to both children and adults alike. The film, which went on the win the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, stars the voices of Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Samuel L. Jackson, Jason Lee, Wallace Shawn, and Sarah Vowell. THE INCREDIBLES is brought to you by Red Hook Bait & Tackle and The Good Fork, who will be on hand serving a mighty incredible dinner: Incredible Meatloaf Sammys with Pickles and Potato Chips ($6 for one or two for $10; vegetarian option also available), and Incredible Lemonade ($3). And as a special treat, our friends from Scout’s Honor are making the drive down from Warren, Vermont to bring us their incredible small batch ice cream sandwiches and organic frozen fruit pops. (We highly recommend the French Macaron Ice Cream Sandwich, ourselves!) And of course Steve’s Key Lime will be staying open late across the parking lot selling their tarts, swingles, and limeade. It’s going to be a hell of a feast to beat the heat!

HIGH FIDELITY . . . coming 8/11!

9 Aug

high-fidelity-vinyl

What came first, the music or the misery? People worry about kids playing with guns, or watching violent videos, that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands, literally thousands of songs about heartbreak, rejection, pain, misery and loss. Did I listen to pop music because I was miserable? Or was I miserable because I listened to pop music?

Decide for yourself this Tuesday at the pier when John Cusack will wax philosophical about life, love, and music in Stephen Frears’ adaptation of Nick Hornby’s best-selling novel, HIGH FIDELITY! Also starring Jack Black, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Joan Cusack, Lili Taylor, Tim Robbins, and a walk-on part by The Boss, HIGH FIDELITY is brought to you by PICKETT FURNITURE and BROOKLYN ICE HOUSE. ICE HOUSE will be on hand serving up smoked pulled-pork sandwiches($6), and mac & cheese ($4), and sodas and water; and STEVE’S KEY LIME PIES will be staying open late to serve their pies, swingles, and limeades.

See you at the pier!

WHEN WE WERE KINGS . . . coming 8/4!

2 Aug

MuhammadAliFistForget SOUTHPAW, join us this Tuesday for one of the greatest boxing films of all time, WHEN WE WERE KINGS.

Leon Gast’s decades-in-the-making documentary chronicles the famous “Rumble in the Jungle” heavyweight championship fight between George Foreman and Muhammad Ali, held in Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1974. Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary, the film also features James Brown, B.B. King, Don King, George Plimpton, Norman Mailer, and Spike Lee.

WHEN WE WERE KINGS is presented by DRY DOCK WINE + SPIRITS and FORT DEFIANCE. Dinner is courtesy of Fort D this week and they will be serving cold fried chicken fingers with moambe sauce (a spicy peanut sauce that forms the basis of Chicken moambe–the national dish of the DRC!), coleslaw, and potato salad–just $12. And Steve’s Key Lime will be staying open late as usual to dish out their delicious tarts and swingles.

This is going to be a good one folks, so let’s hear it: “Ali boma ye! Ali boma ye!” And we’ll see you at the pier.

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA . . . coming 7/28!

22 Jul

Jack Burton is a reasonable guy who’s just experienced some very unreasonable things, not least of which involves getting dragged into an epic battle between the supernatural forces of good and evil–and all so his friend can save his beloved from a forced wedding to a very wicked and immortal sorcerer named Lo Pan.

Kurt Russell stars alongside a pre-SEX AND THE CITY Kim Cattrall, and Kate Burton in John Carpenter’s cult classic, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA. Special thanks to our sponsors for the evening, Find Home Furnishings and PokPok Ny for bringing Carpenter’s modern-day western to the pier this Tuesday.  PokPok will be there serving Khao Man Som Tam (green papaya salad served with coconut rice, sweet shredded pork, fried shallots and cilantro–just $10, and the favorite dish of evil sorcerers everywhere, or so we hear); and Steve’s Key Lime, as always, will stay open late so you can partake of their tarty goodness.

See you at the pier!
