HUSTLE & FLOW . . . coming 7/15!

13 Jul

hustleflowLet’s just get this out of the way right now: It’s hard out there for a pimp–and this tuesday at Valentino Pier, you’ll find out why. Terrence Howard received an Academy-Award nomination for his performance as Djay, a Memphis hustler and pimp chasing his dream of being an emcee in Craig Brewer’s HUSTLE & FLOW. Produced by John Singleton, and also starring Ludacris and Isaac Hayes, the film’s ubiquitous ear worm of a track “It’s Hard Out Here For a Pimp” nabbed an Oscar for Three 6 Mafia, making them the first hip hop group to win an Academy Award for Best Song.

HUSTLE & FLOW is brought to you by Sunny’s Bar and Home/Made, who will be on hand serving a menu of citrus ricotta on grilled filone, marinated goat cheese on pizza bianca, peach lemonade, garlic butter popcorn, and Home/Made focaccia. And as always, Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the parking lot and serving their delicious  pies and swingles. The forecast is once again looking unstable, so check here on the day of for updates. We’ll make the call on whether we’ll move to our rain location by  6 P.M.  Otherwise, see you at the pier!

Fundraiser Update: BREAKING NIGHT screens this sunday

17 May

breaking night

At this Sunday’s fundraiser we have a couple of special shorts screening that we’re super excited about, including BREAKING NIGHT by Red Hook’s own Yolanda Ross. You might recognize Yolanda from her acting work on HBO’s TREME or on stage with New York’s Labrynth Theater Company.  BREAKING NIGHT, also starring Clarke Peters (THE WIRE, TREME),  is her directorial debut and won Best Short Film at last year’s San Diego Indie Film Festival.

We’re really honored that Yolanda’s sharing her work with us, so come on out to Bait and Tackle this Sunday at 5, have some great food from our sponsors, vote for Neighborhood Choice, find out what’s screening on the pier this summer, and see BREAKING NIGHT!

STRICTLY BALLROOM . . . coming 7/30!

26 Jul

strictly ballroom

This Tuesday on the Pier, Baz Luhrmann’s first and possibly best film: STRICTLY BALLROOM!

The inaugural installment of his “Red Curtain Trilogy,” which went on to include ROMEO + JULIET and MOULIN ROUGE, STRICTLY BALLROOM is his lavish and laugh-out-loud funny send-up of Australian competitive dance culture. It’s like SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER by way of Christopher Guest. And you owe it to yourself to see this, if only to cleanse from your mind the mess that was GATSBY and remind yourself what an amazing filmmaker Luhrmann can be.

Our sponsors for the evening are Waterfront Kitchens and Mark’s Pizza, who will be on site serving fresh pizza by the slice. Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the way serving tarts and swingles, and our concession stand will have water, San Pellegrino, and more.

Film rolls at 8:30, or as soon as it’s dark enough, and a classic Popeye cartoon kicks things off.

Now, “Show me your Paso Doble!”

Summer is almost upon us and despite all the havoc wrought by Sandy to Red Hook in general, and our extraordinary sponsors in particular, Red Hook Flicks is rising from the floodwaters to bring you another season of summer films, sunsets on the water, and some seriously awesome local food. The film committee has been hard at work wrangling all the moving parts, so check back here in the coming weeks for information of our upcoming fundraiser on June 2nd, details on this year’s sponsors, and of course the big reveal of our 2013 schedule! See you at the pier . . .
