Summer Is Coming

3 Apr

Ok, a little Game of Thrones humor. But really…summer is almost here.

We are diligently working on planning the 2012 season of Red Hook Flicks. (Yes, there is a name change. Long story. Update your bookmarks.)

What we can tell you: The movies will again be shown at Valentino Pier on Tuesday evenings, beginning July 10.

Watch this space for news on our annual fundraiser and final movie selections.

Tonight: PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE

13 Sep

It’s time to say goodbye to the 2011 Red Hook Summer Movies season — but we’re going out big! Tonight we’re screening PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE.

This is the “Red Hook Choice” film because you all voted for it during our fundraiser in the spring. Of all the great offerings — Starship Troopers, Back to the Future, and more — this is the one you said you wanted to see.

So bring your bike and come on down to Valentino Pier. Film starts at 8:30 p.m.

Steve’s Authentic Key Lime Pies is sponsoring this evening, and they’ll be on site with pie for dessert. Plus, as always, there’s Home/Made popcorn for a buck.

Sept. 6: HIGHLANDER!

5 Sep

There can be only one!

Watch the immortals fight to the end — in kilts! Plus, it’s a great film for New York City spotting. And, there’s the Queen soundtrack.

(When I first moved to the city, I wanted to live on Hudson Street because the Highlander is an antiques dealer on Hudson Street. And he had a *sweet* pad. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check out the trailer. You won’t be able to resist.)

Join us at 8:3o p.m. on September 6 for HIGHLANDER, brought to us by Pickett Furniture.

DUE TO THE RAIN WE WILL BE AT BAIT AND TACKLE, located on the corner of Pioneer and Van Brunt Streets.

And here’s Jeremy Pickett, our sponsor, doing his best highlander impression.

August 30: PUMP UP THE VOLUME

29 Aug

Talk hard!

We’re still planning to show PUMP UP THE VOLUME tomorrow night (August 30) despite Hurricane Irene’s best intentions to shut down Valentino Pier.

The ground is drying out and the weather is promising to be gorgeous!

The evening’s sponsor is FORT DEFIANCE, and owner St. John Frizell is serving up a tasty-sounding menu: cold fried chicken, coleslaw, lemonade and sweet tea. Mmmm.

As always, we’ll have popcorn from Home/Made for sale for just $1 — and all proceeds benefit the films series. No popcorn tonight. It’s been a crazy week for us all down here in Red Hook!

Hope to see you all down in Zone A on Tuesday night!

And here’s St. John doing his best Christian Slater impression — with cocktail shakers!

Tonight: IRON GIANT

23 Aug

What comes after an earthquake? Zombies. Of course.

And where is the safest hood in all of NYC when it comes to zombie attacks? Red Hook. Of course. (Srsly. You can’t get here and we have chain saws. Plus, Park Slope has babies. Zombies like babies.)

So join us tonight for a free screening of THE IRON GIANT, sponsored by Waterfront Kitchens. We’ll start around 8:30 p.m., and Mark’s Pizza will be on hand serving dinner. Plus, $1 popcorn from Home/Made. (All proceeds support the film series.)

It’s for your own safety.

August 23: IRON GIANT

18 Aug

Can’t get enough Vin Diesel? Don’t worry — he’ll be back at Red Hook Summer Movies next Tuesday.

That’s right: He’s the voice of the IRON GIANT.

WATERFRONT KITCHENS is sponsoring this animated film that is good for kids and adults alike. You’ll probably even shed a few tears. (We won’t say anything.)

The film starts at 8:30 p.m., but Mark’s Pizza will be on site selling slices for dinner. Plus, we have $1 popcorn from Home/Made.

Here’s a great photo of the night’s sponsor, George Monos, playing Iron Giant.

FAST AND THE FURIOUS still showing

16 Aug

Dear rain, go away. Don’t come back another day. In fact, go to Texas or somewhere with a drought. Love, Red Hook Summer Movies.

Still …. don’t despair. We’re still showing THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS tonight. We’re just moving to our rain location: RED HOOK BAIT & TACKLE. (Due to soggy turf. Even if it’s not raining, it’s too wet to set in the lawn.)

Yes, it is kid friendly. (But yes, it is a bar. Red Hook has limited community spaces.)

You can find it at the corner of Van Brunt and Pioneer streets.

8:30 p.m.

August 16: THE FAST & THE FURIOUS

11 Aug

Next week we serve up a giant helping of fast cars, fast music and fast men. Yes, it’s two hours of staring a Vin Diesel in his prime. Oh, and that other guy, too. (Plus, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez, if that’s your preference.)

The O’Connell Oganization is sponsoring THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS, and The Brooklyn Ice House will be on hand serving dinner. (For Wall-E they did pulled pork, hot dogs, and mac n’ cheese — it was delish! — so we’ll see what they do for TFATF.)

Here’s Greg O’Connell Jr. and his brother, Michael, doing their best Brian and Dominic impression. (Shot by photographer extraordinaire, Craig LaCourt.)

Um, and did y’all know there’s a TFATF 6 coming next year? With Letty rumored to be coming back?!?!?! IMDB says it might be so.

Karate Kid NOT rained out

9 Aug

We will be showing the KARATE KID at the Red Hook Bait and Tackle (Van Brunt and Pioneer streets).

Still at 8:30 p.m.

Good Fork will still be serving Mr. Miyagi Bento Boxes for dinner (come early and get one!)

Plus, this means we can drink! Here’s the Karate Kid drinking game:

Take a drink every time:

  • Danny Russo gets beat up.
  • Danny Russo looks beat up.
  • Whenever you see the Cobra Kai logo.
  • Every time some karate move is happening.

Now that almost makes it worth not having the movie at the pier!

Tonight! KARATE KID

9 Aug

Karate here. Karate no here.

Actually, Karate at Valentino Pier at 8:30 p.m. tonight. We’re showing the original KARATE KID with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi.

Sponsors RED HOOK BAIT & TACKLE and THE GOOD FORK will be serving dinner: Mr. Miyagi Bento Boxes. Come see what surprise will be inside.

Plus, we’ll have popcorn from Home/Made for $1 per bag (all proceeds benefit the film series).

IN CASE OF RAIN: We will be showing the film at the Red Hook Bait and Tackle, located at Van Brunt and Pioneer streets. Watch this site — and Twitter handle @redhookfilms — for details.
