DAZED AND CONFUSED . . . coming 7/8!

6 Jul

DazedMMRAIN UPDATE: It’s looking a little iffy for later in the evening but since DAZED AND CONFUSED is only 90 minutes and we know how much you all love to be outside, we’re going to roll the dice and stick with it at the pier. That said, we are going to start PROMPTLY at 8:30. So be there early and bring some rain gear!

Long before the McConaissance that brought us MAGIC MIKE, DALLAS BUYERS CLUB, the spectacular weirdness of TRUE DETECTIVE and one previously inconceivable Oscar win, Matthew McConaughey was  just a young Texan with aspirations of stardom and a penchant for pot and naked bongo playing. This Tuesday we kick off the 2014 summer movie series with the film that gave McConaughey his first big break: Richard Linklater’s 1993 cult-classic DAZED AND CONFUSED! Come watch The Shirtless One wax philosophic about high school girls and why you gotta just keep on livin’ alongside Milla Jovovich, Parker Posey, Ben Affleck, and an uncredited Renee Zellweger–and catch a preview of Richard Linklater’s upcoming film BOYHOOD at the same time!

DAZED AND CONFUSED is brought to you by Red Hook Bait and Tackle and The Good Fork, who will be on hand with two delicious choices for dinner: vermicelli with Early Girl Farm vegetables, white soy ponzu, and shredded chicken ($7) or the highly-stoner-approved mac cheese with bacon and cheetos ($5)! Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the way selling their delicious tarts and swingles and our friends from Scout’s Honor Ice Cream are making the trip down from Vermont to bring us their amazing, hand-crafted ice-cream sandwiches and ice pops.

Update on Tomorrow’s Menu and Special Short Film Screening!

26 Aug

ImageMore exciting news about tomorrow’s screening of DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD! Red Hook Flicks has partnered with African Film Festival, Inc. to show a short film called “Bongo Barbershop” before tomorrow’s main event. Here’s a brief description:

An East African MC, Balozi Dola, wanders into a Bronx barbershop on his pilgrimage to find “the real hip hop.” Stumbling upon the pioneers of the New York hip hop scene, including Grandmaster Flash’s original partner DJ Easy Mike, Balozi enters the scene rhyming with Grandmaster Caz. “Bongo” is the Swahili expression for “Brain” used in local hip hop slang.

African Film Festival, Inc. (AFF) is dedicated to advancing an enhanced understanding of African culture through the moving image. It offers diverse platforms for the wide distribution of African media through its flagship annual film festival and complementary year-round programming. AFF is committed to increasing visibility and recognition for African media artists by introducing African film and culture to a broad range of audiences in the United States and abroad, bypassing economic, class and racial barriers.

We’re psyched to be closing out our season by teaming up with this awesome organization to show this film. Our sponsors, Home/Made and Pickett Furniture, are bringing us a delicious menu of foccacia with figs from Jeremy Pickett’s own backyard, and Home/Made is bringing back their popcorn for those of you who have been missing it this year. We’ll also have Paletas, Mexican ice pops, from neighbor La Newyorkina, and Walter Youngblood will be on hand with his popsicles again, so there’ll be no shortage of delicious treats on our final night! The weather report is looking good, so we’ll see you at the pier!

DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, coming August 27!

24 Aug

Image

Hard to believe it, but the final movie of this year’s Red Hook Flicks is nearly upon us! Come out to the pier one last time for DON’T TELL MOM THE BABYSITTER’S DEAD, voted the Audience Choice film at our fundraiser, back in June a million years ago. DON’T TELL MOM, a cult classic starring Christina Applegate in her prime, is sponsored by Pickett Furniture and Home/Made. In addition to whatever deliciousness Home/Made is serving for dinner, Steve’s Key Lime will be open late selling tarts, pies and swingles.

The film starts at 8:30. If there’s any chance of rain, check back here for updates on any possible location change. In the meantime, let’s all keep our fingers crossed for good weather…

THE THING . . . coming 8/13!

10 Aug

the-thing_1982

I don’t know what the hell’s in there, but it’s weird and pissed off, whatever it is.

Fire up your flamethrowers and grab your dynamite because this tuesday Red Hook Flicks brings you THE THING–John Carpenter’s 1982 boy-meets-dog, dog-turns-out-to-be-a-blood-thirsty-shape-shifting-alien classic!

THE THING is brought to you by The O’Connell Organization and Hometown BBQ. For those of you who have been anxiously awaiting Hometown’s grand opening–us included!–you can sample some of their excellent smoked meaty goodness that night! King Leche Cremes will also be on hand serving their hand-crafted goat’s milk ice cream and Steve’s Key Lime will, as always, be open across the parking lot serving their tarts and swingles.  A girl could put on some serious pounds during a film series as deliciously fortified as this…

Film rolls at 8:30, (or as soon as it’s dark enough) and check back here if there’s any question of rain.

Otherwise, see you at the pier!

STRICTLY BALLROOM . . . coming 7/30!

26 Jul

strictly ballroom

This Tuesday on the Pier, Baz Luhrmann’s first and possibly best film: STRICTLY BALLROOM!

The inaugural installment of his “Red Curtain Trilogy,” which went on to include ROMEO + JULIET and MOULIN ROUGE, STRICTLY BALLROOM is his lavish and laugh-out-loud funny send-up of Australian competitive dance culture. It’s like SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER by way of Christopher Guest. And you owe it to yourself to see this, if only to cleanse from your mind the mess that was GATSBY and remind yourself what an amazing filmmaker Luhrmann can be.

Our sponsors for the evening are Waterfront Kitchens and Mark’s Pizza, who will be on site serving fresh pizza by the slice. Steve’s Key Lime will be open across the way serving tarts and swingles, and our concession stand will have water, San Pellegrino, and more.

Film rolls at 8:30, or as soon as it’s dark enough, and a classic Popeye cartoon kicks things off.

Now, “Show me your Paso Doble!”

SHAFT (2000) . . . Tomorrow!

22 Jul

shaft2Tomorrow at 8:30 it’s SHAFT (2000)–and rain or shine the show will roll at 8:30 PM. Check back here for updates tomorrow afternoon but, if there are storm clouds on the horizon we’ll, as always, be setting up shop at the Bait & Tackle instead.

SHAFT is brought to us by Find Home Furnishing and our food sponsor this evening is Pok Pok Ny. So, while we all eagerly await the opening of Whisky Soda Lounge Ny–not to mention their new (and larger!) space on Columbia Street–we can chow down on some Khao Man Som Tom (Green papaya salad with coconut rice, sweet shredded pork, fried shallots, and cilantro–$10).  And, hey, you know what goes really well with spicy Thai food? Beer.

So, maybe a little rain won’t be a bad thing.

KUNG FU PANDA . . . coming 7/16!

11 Jul

kung fu panda

In the Valley of Peace, Po the Panda finds himself chosen as the Dragon Warrior despite the fact that he is, well, a little on the portly side. Not to mention lazy. And knows sweet f*%k all about martial arts. But this of course does not stop him from rising to the challenge of becoming a master warrior and leading The Furious Five in a battle against the sinister snow leopard Tai Lung! If you like your martial arts heroes black and white and furry all over, then this one’s for you!

Kung Fu Panda is brought to you by Red Hook Bait and Tackle and The Good Fork.

And what’s on the menu for dinner you might ask? Well, Kung Pao Panda of course!

(We hear it tastes just like chicken.)

And for our vegetarian friends, there’s Kung Pao Tofu!

(Tastes just like panda.)

Both are served with rice and just $7. Yum! And in addition to Steve’s Key Lime Pies, our friend’s from Scout’s Honor Ice Cream will be making the drive all the way from Vermont to bring you their handcrafted frozen treats. Ska-doosh!
