Pretty shitty choice of flicks….i mean seriously, some lame ones there, not really ones that the majority of people would love!

  2. KT June 10, 2012 at 11:34 pm #

Zombies, monsters, vampires, aliens, and dragons….are you kidding me? Who decides this crap…a bunch of 20 something boys? How about a western? A foreign film? Something made before 1975? A musical? And don’t give me the crap about “the other outdoor film series have those” I want some (I said some, not all) here…in RH…my neighborhood! Is it too much to ask?

    • SSWHITTON June 20, 2012 at 5:26 pm #

Wow. Don’t go then. Spare us all from your negativity.

      • Beth July 7, 2012 at 9:28 am #

Thank you, SS! I just moved here and everyone I’ve met has been awesome. So either they have some real asshole alter-egos online …. or these whiny bitches never come out of their hidey holes anyway.

This lineup is a fun reason to get together with members of your community … if you like fun and you like your community.

      • Johnny C. July 10, 2012 at 4:59 pm #

That was pretty funny, Beth – the young lady who was complaining about online aliases and then signs it “Beth”. People use anonymity for a reason – to avoid the kind of misdirected anger you showed in your post, only due to people having different taste to yours. And aren’t you used to internet anonymity yet? If you really want to know who someone is, make friends with them. Being nice actually works! : )

Red Hook is at least trying to find crowd-pleasers, but if you look at a summer film schedule as popular as the Bryant Park film schedule, you’ll still see a fair share of boners and Hollywood filler. Anyone, including myself, who is looking for intelligent, brilliant films with great writing and sublime acting, should go to places like Anthology Film Archives or the Landmark Sunshine, IFC, Film Forum, etc. We shouldn’t expect anyone who takes kids to a throwaway summer film party to want to see Naked Lunch or a Jodorowsky film. But that’s the crux of it – the films get dumber, the people have gone dumber, and the world has fewer ethics. Something’s rigged and it’s not getting any better. I’m assuming Hollywood and friends wants us to completely wallow for a while longer while they continue to fleece us with scams like 3-D (for 17 bucks) and crap like that…

Good thing there are so many alternatives to Hollywood these days – we don’t have to wallow in the cinematic trough if we don’t want to. Anyone who doesn’t like the films Red Hook Flicks has to offer, just don’t go – you won’t, I won’t if I don’t like the film. No big deal. There are so many things in life that are better than movies that we can do RIGHT IN RED HOOK! :D

    • Johnny C. June 25, 2012 at 1:44 pm #

Seriously. One of the most mind-numbingly irrelevant movie schedules. What is “Blade” doing on there? You guys need someone who is a cinephile, not someone who is a couch junkie, like whoever approved this list. Yikes.

      • Damian July 12, 2012 at 9:57 pm #

So go somewhere else. Some of us like to watch a corny movie. And honestly, if you’re “serious” about watching a movie, an outdoor screening is probably not your best option anyway. Bye.

    • Nanday May 8, 2013 at 10:39 am #

I completely agree – the biggest disappointment shouldn’t be at the end of this series of film.. jeeeeez Popeye! are you serious.. dang that’s annoying.

      • haimerlad May 8, 2013 at 10:11 pm #

You are looking at the schedule from last year, btw. And we showed Popeye shorts before each movie as a way to entertain kids as the sun was setting. It wasn’t that we showed Popeye at the end of the season.

  3. haimerlad June 11, 2012 at 9:19 am #

Feel free to join the Red Hook Flicks committee if you’d like to see different movies. This is all done by neighbors just trying to make some fun in the summer.

  4. Dale June 11, 2012 at 11:09 am #

In response to the negative feedback posted here, I just wanted to voice some applause for this summer’s selection. I couldn’t be more excited for the movies that were chosen. I think it’s a fun theme with a good variety of family-friendly as well as adult-oriented titles. I plan to be at every Tuesday screening. Thanks RH Flicks committee!

  5. Dale June 11, 2012 at 11:14 am #

After reading the negative responses, I just wanted to voice some applause for this summer’s selection. I couldn’t be more excited to see the films that were chosen. I think it’s a fun theme and a good variety of both kid-friendly and adult-oriented movies. I plan to be at every Tuesday show. Thanks RH Flicks committee for a job well done!

  6. E June 11, 2012 at 11:48 am #

To echo Dale’s sentiments, I find it amazing that people are complaining about an ABSOLUTELY FREE MOVIE SERIES. If you don’t like what they selected, then don’t go. It’s that simple.

Kudos to the Red Hook Flicks committee for selecting some great films for anyone to see for free of charge. Not everyone is ungrateful for what you guys are doing.

  7. D June 11, 2012 at 9:57 pm #

I second E. and Dale–thank you! And for those who don’t care for the selection: join the committee and pitch in. This only happens because a few local people volunteer their time to make it happen and local businesses are willing to donate money to foot the bill.

  8. o June 11, 2012 at 10:06 pm #

Thanks for organizing the film schedule, sponsors and the summertime option on Tuesdays

  9. CinePhil69 June 12, 2012 at 12:57 am #

Are you SEER-EE-OUS. People HELL-O. Does the name Wesley Wales Mortimer Anderson mean NOTHING to you? How about a chap named David-freaking-LYNCH! You mean you actually expect me spend two hours on a beautiful pier at no charge having a GOOD TIME? Film isn’t “fun.” That’s why I moved to this place–to hate everything! THERE GOES THE NEIGHBORHOOD. AT least you could have considered that mumblecore noir from the Djiboutian lowlands–BUT YOU PROBABLY HAVEN’T HEARD OF IT. It transgressed 15 transgressions–A RECORD NUMBER. Enjoy your “Tremors,” folks– I’ll be in my basement watching ants pee on a broken vase ALL BY MYSELF.

    • Jack Lesard June 12, 2012 at 1:18 pm #

      That basement show sounds awesome.

    • Eric August 14, 2012 at 9:18 pm #

      That’s probably where you belong.

  10. brooklynguy June 19, 2012 at 3:34 pm #

I don’t love every selection here either, but there are a few gems and I appreciate the chance to be able to come out and enjoy those films in a lovely location. Thanks for all of the effort that goes into setting it up. And please excuse the poor manners of Damien and KT – they clearly haven’t yet learned that there are productive ways to express opinions.

  11. oliver June 22, 2012 at 11:23 am #

I’m not even a RH resident – I’ll make the trek from LES since the line up looks awesome! The Manhattan line up leaves something to be desired, IMHO.

  12. Johnny C. June 25, 2012 at 1:51 pm #

I think the point is, let’s try to make it a little better next year. The selection is a little heavy on the dumb films and there are people besides kids who will be going. At any rate, the kids will probably be running around creating chaos, so the movies could have been a little more thoughtful and geared toward a more mature audience. Of course it’s nice to have a Red Hook film series. But let’s put some actual films on there and not as many “movies” – television, computers, and life in general does enough to dumb everything into the Stone Age. But thanks for getting the film series off the ground!

  13. haimerlad June 25, 2012 at 2:25 pm #

To everyone who has concerns about the lineup: We encourage you to get involved in the season. We are always looking for people who want to volunteer their time with us to decide the movies, do the postering, set up and tear down the movies, work with the sponsors, etc. The more the merrier.

The committee tries to come with a list of films that will appeal to a variety of audiences. We try hard to ensure there is at least one film for kids and that we hit adventure, horror, romance and comedy notes as well. We look for blockbusters as well as the unexpected. Plus, we have to consider language, run times and what a bulk of people want to come out to a film series to see.

In general, we’ve found that we have a larger audience for “movies” not “films.” People have wanted to see things that don’t take too much focus — are entertainment — because the kids, noise, light pollution, etc. can make for a challenging environment. Then, we try not to hit the same films that get shown repeatedly at other film series. On top of that, we try to have a theme to wrap everything together.

We don’t hit the right note 100% of the time, but we do put a lot of effort into the series. And hey, at least we’re doing something. Again, come join us.

  14. Johnny C. June 25, 2012 at 2:43 pm #

I’ll definitely be there. I still think it’s great that you guys are doing it. If anything, comment threads still give you enough feedback to gauge what people are sometimes looking for. I’m sure it’ll be really successful out there. Absolutely, some of the choices were great, after I looked it over a second time – Alien, Young Frankenstein, Zombieland – fun movies, for sure.

Where should I sign up to volunteer?

  15. Jeff July 5, 2012 at 8:13 pm #

Hell no, you idiots. I think the lineup is great. They are definitely likeable movies and why should you fault them for not creating some art-house screening schedule?? This schedule is really refreshing from many of the other summer movie schedules. Don’t change a thing!

and now you’re going to get a bunch of PhD film people curating the movie schedule if you keep asking for people to join the staff! Keep it how you guys want to do it, you’re great.

    • Johnny C. July 5, 2012 at 10:51 pm #

Yeah, you’re right, Jeff. College is bad. Education should cease at the high school level. Bring on Blade 3! Bring on Adam Sandler! : )

      • Rowland Laedlein July 7, 2012 at 10:12 pm #

        Elitist snob.

  16. D July 8, 2012 at 12:55 pm #

I have both a graduate school education in comp lit AND am totally stoked for Blade. It’s a summer film series. There’s a reason why studios release their big tentpole films in June, July and August, and their Oscar contenders in the fall.

    • Johnny C. July 9, 2012 at 9:09 am #

I agree with you, D., but there is still a dearth of imagination and progress within Hollywood itself – and I think there are many, many great films that could be Summery and escapist AND intelligent. If you look at most sensible complaints about the quality of Hollywood summer movies, the complaints are pretty reasonable and valid – maybe not on this thread, but other threads, although some good points have been made here, as well.

The responsibility of filmmakers does not end and there is never a need to coast. Art and entertainment serving the masses is a delicate affair – and Hollywood has handled their responsibilities with ham-fisted and heavy-handed mediocrity in recent years. I can name a hundred independent films right off the bat that would be even more fun and even more appropriate for families than violent action films and overblown Hollywood product.

Either way, it’s no big deal. It’s just a summer escape in Red Hook, it’s not Cannes. But they’re your kids, your grandmas, your psyches. You are what you eat. ; )

  17. Johnny C. July 10, 2012 at 9:52 am #

I think Jeff’s comment “elitist snob” is symbolic of the inherent gulf between people who care about content and people who eat “junk food”. Most people prefer well-made films, in the end – those are the ones that are remembered more – and those films were made by great artists and directors. Education, college, good films, culture – all these things can and do co-exist with popular culture – there is no “us” and “them”, there is no elitist strata that looks down on the masses with disdain, because we’re all a community, each of us better because of one another and the different things we bring to the table. Jeff does not need to divide us by acting like someone’s taste means, to him, that person is elitist. Great, well-made films are everywhere, including, sometimes, in Hollywood.

Jeff, everyone should have a shot at college and a chance to see the great films – the big multiplexes force-feed most of the world violent, meaningless crap most of the time and market it as escapist because of the dullness of most people not liking their jobs. It would be nice if films did not have to be an escape from the grinding reality forced on just about everyone. Great films inspire new realities and also a passion for our actual reality. Education and great films aren’t elitist, Jeff, although there are elements of our distorted work-obsessed culture that would have you believe that.

Bring on Alien and the other great films – there’s next year also. Thanks Red Hook Flicks… : )

    • Johnny C. July 10, 2012 at 5:07 pm #

Sorry, it wasn’t Jeff’s reply, it was Rowland Laedlein’s reply “elitist snob” that pointed out just how glamorized the dumbing down of Hollywood and the worshipping of ultra-violence has become that a mere request for better films is turned into an “elitist” thing.

Ultra-violence, like in Blade, has become way too easily accepted and seems to have been integrated into the violent, hostile, ADD world of the present and near-future. It matters what goes into everything, even a small summer film schedule in Red Hook – people think you’re taking life too seriously and being “elitist” if you recommend a more sustaining and enriching film schedule?

  18. Marisa July 10, 2012 at 3:44 pm #

I love these choices! Fun! Can’t wait!

  19. EB Watts July 18, 2012 at 12:15 pm #

Let’s face it…the people who post comments are usually the extremes of any population. The best way to gauge whether the public actually likes the lineup is to see who shows up. For better or worse, very few people will give up their most precious resource (i.e., time), to take a risk on a foreign or art house film they’ve never heard of before. There are tons of film festivals here that will give you exactly that experience, if that is your cup of tea. As for the pre-1975 crowd, To Kill a Mockingbird and The Maltese Falcon are also playing at outdoor screenings in Brooklyn. I’m from out of state, and I have no idea why anyone would criticize a free outdoor movie series with an incredible view, especially when there are so many other options .. even right here in Brooklyn. As for me…I love the lineup!! And I also love indie, pre-1975, intellectually-stimulating, creative films to boot! Great job guys!

    • Johnny C. July 18, 2012 at 11:09 pm #

It is possible to have a commercial film that is also extremely bright. Blade is not one of those, nor is Tremors. Alien is. Zombieland, sort of. The selection is better than some, but a film does not have to be independent and art house or foreign to be intelligent. There are plenty of intelligent Hollywood films from 1975 to 2012 and there are many from that period that would have been incredible choices that have not been presented yet. There are really too many films to list in that category that are more obvious choices than Blade and Tremors that would not only be more intelligent and more family-oriented, but also less violent, even more mainstream and Hollywood and would please more demographics – in other words, most female moviegoers could care less about Tremors and Blade. It’s a pretty testosterone-induced list. You don’t need chick-flicks to induce the lasses to go, but you do need less of the Wesley-Snipes-with-a-sword type of movie. And so on.

This list is more for teenage boys who wanna see things explode and heads cut off. And it’s not too family-friendly, by and large, since Red Hook Flicks seems to have claimed that they would like local families to be a part of the proceedings.

Incidentally, I think many of the comments here about Red Hook Flicks have been right on, both the pro and the con. It’s nice to see the comments coming from legitimately passionate film aficionados, as Red Hook and Carroll Gardens have their fair share of cinephiles and people who love entertaining movies and summer fare, indies and blockbusters. I understand why people are defensive of the list, but you should consider that there is always room for improvement and that is what we are shooting for, for next year. It is a privilege to have a summer film series and if Red Hook Flicks wants suggestions and contributions, here they are, free of charge. These threads are really about improvement – nobody wants to see them go away. So thanks for the presentation of these films, RH Flicks!

      • D August 1, 2012 at 10:00 am #

In a weird way it’s kind of sexist to assume that this list is only for boys. I’m a girl and I love horror movies and cannot wait for BLADE which has one of the great opening scenes in modern horror. It may not be the sophisticated existential space drama that ALIEN is–and I love ALIEN–but it’s still a great horror film and a great comic book movie.

  20. Danielle July 31, 2012 at 2:54 pm #

I cannot believe the responses here. This lineup is awesome. I can’t wait for Aliens (TONIGHT!) and I was stoked to see Tremors the other night. I went to film school and this lineup is exactly what i want to see at an outdoor theater. You know half the people are talking, shouting at the screen, everyone’s seen it 50 times before and you all quote lines together.. do you really want to watch David Lynch in that environment? Outdoor theaters show Indiana Jones and Star Wars every year for a reason. I thought this lineup was exciting and unique and I can’t wait to go back. Keep up the great work @haimerlad

    • caseband July 31, 2012 at 6:05 pm #

Ditto! This summer film line up has been great. Haters don’t have to attend. More popcorn for us. Thanks so much to all our neighbors who organize this for our veiwing pleasure.
